Tracking your results is key in Texas Holdem
If you have any desire of taking holdem poker seriously then you really do need to start tracking your results. A failure to do so will not only leave you in the bad situation of not knowing how much you are winning or losing but it has other potential ramifications as well. Let us say that you had only made $500 over the course of a year playing no-limit Texas Holdem online and you had failed to keep records. If you don’t know how much you are ahead then how can you possibly measure your game against that of your opponents?
The fact is that you can’t and when you cannot measure yourself against your opponents then you are shooting in the dark so to speak when it comes to trying to make money. If this player played 20 hours a week and had played 1000 hours over the space of a year then it is clear that an earn rate of $0.50/hour is well below where he could be with just a little more work on his game. But how can this player put the work in if they are not even aware that they are only making $0.50/hour?
In poker then when it comes to making money and doing so repeatedly then you must be better than at least some of the players who are on the table that you are about to sit down in. If the game is limit hold’em then you need to be better than most of them but in no-limit then it can be a far smaller number due to the huge pay-offs that you can get relative to the size of the blinds. However if you constantly sit in poker games where you have no or very little skill advantage over your opponents then how can you possibly make money?
The fact of the matter is that you can’t and if your skill advantage is only minor then the effect of the rake will simply do the rest in not allowing you to make money. However though there is one very powerful exception to this and it is to do with rakeback and if you can multi-table a large number of poker tables in a way that breaks even over all the tables combined then the amount of rake that you will generate will increase dramatically. The natural knock on from this is that you will qualify for far greater amounts of rakeback.
But what is underpinning this successful strategy is knowing how you stand in the poker pecking order and you can only know this by tracking your results along with your play. It is for this reason why accurate record keeping is pivotal to your chances of making money as you start out in poker. At the end of the day your results over time are a pretty good representation of two things, your overall skill level and also your quality of game selection. If these two factors are lacking then making money in poker is very difficult.
