Im losing for October
For some reason I cant get a winning session under my belt for this month. It sucks as Ive been playing close to my A-game, but Im really being slaughtered by cold deck situations (nights with 3 set-over-set instances etc, it sucks badly) Yesterday I lost a big chunk of my bankroll in a rollercoaster I can only describe as sick Flopped quad tens to get rivered by Quad kings (all the money went in on the turn, obv nothing he could do but still), made a straight flush and LOST against the higher straight flush and flopped a set of sixes only to get beat by a set of aces that decided to smoothcall pre-flop BAH October 8, 2008 | In Personal, Quads, Straight Flush, gambling, poker | No Comments RSS feed for comments on this post. Professional poker players around the world have been using the services of rakeupdate.com for some time now only to find that the firm have been unapproachable for the past month. Despite repeated efforts to contact them players havent managed to get a response from the firm. It has been six weeks since the companys network provider, Elite Affiliate Software stopped providing services to the firm due to non-payment of their funds. There is more than $1 million owed to clients and it doesnt look like they are going to see their money any time soon.Unlike with Full Tilt Poker it looks like personal problems between the owners of the company have led to its downfall. There was a power struggle in the company as to who was ultimately in charge between the two biggest personalities involved, Mike Haid and Daniel Persson, it was Persson who who ultimately won with Haid and several other key employees walking away from the firm. This was a year ago and the service offered by the sites run by the firm immediately suffered. Players are said to have lost massive amounts of money since the firm stopped responding to players requests.In an interesting angle on the events of Black Friday that poker players dont usually hear about, the people at Rake Update also suffered massive problems owing to the fact that the big payment processors pulled out of the United States, they were particularly hard hit when Moneybookers and Neteller walked away from the market. When that happened they had to rely exclusively on gaming firms that were operating in contrast to US gaming laws including almost exclusively Full Tilt Poker. When the CEREUS Network and Full Tilt were taken down by the Department of Justice (DoJ) there were no more funds coming into rakeupdate.com and yet they were still paying out funds to customers. It was inevitable that they were going to implode the question was only the timing, of course none of this was known until later. The effects of this problem are far reaching indeed, although not on the scale as with Full Tilt Poker the ripples have still been sent throughout the industry.

An estimated 50,000 Americans made their living from playing poker online and overnight not only did they have their livelihoods taken away from them but also their savings. When the US Department of Justice swooped down on the biggest three poker sites in the world their accounts were frozen. In the case of Poker Stars it was just a temporary setback and their players all regained access to their accounts within a matter of days. With regards to Absolute Poker (CEREUS Network) and Full Tilt Poker players are still waiting for their money and it wouldnt be unwise to assume that the money isnt coming back any time soon.Poker players in the United States still have several options if they want to continue to ply their trade. They can leave their homes for a country that hasnt outlawed online poker, Canada is a particularly popular choice. The problem is that the Canadians arent particularly excited about having poker players moving to their country and Canadian immigration authorities are now insisting that those moving across the border in order to play poker register their intention on their visa applications and have the intention of taxing them on their winnings. This leaves open the other option of moving to another country and simply living on a tourist visa making occasional trips away for the purposes of renewing their visa. The problem with this option is it means abandoning their homes. Not all players find success at the top level but most are grinders who make a living without becoming millionaires and they cant just afford to pick up and leave everything behind.The live game in the US is experiencing something of a revival, probably owing to the collapse of the online game. There are casinos in many US states and they are expanding their card rooms to cope with the influx of poker pros looking for action. Although there isnt as much money in the live cash games, the live tournaments, particularly the big ones such as the World Poker Tour offer hundreds of thousands of dollars in prize money, making them a very tempting target. It is estimated that tens of millions of American citizens enjoyed playing poker online and thousands made their living from the game. An elite few were fully sponsored pros meaning that they were able to play with someone elses money and split the profits. When the online game was taken away from citizens of the United States the thousands of men and women who depended on online poker for their livelihood were left without a source of income. Former online players have dealt with these changes in a number of ways. Some have left the United States for Canada and other countries where it is legal to play, others have gone to the local casinos to play in live tournaments and tables leading to a massive increase in the number of players playing live. One former fully sponsored pro poker player is Bryan Trischetta. The fact that he cant play online anymore ensured that he had to start making regular visits to Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs casino room to make some money.
